Skin care is personal and that should be reflected in your beauty ritual. Implementing a practical routine that fits with your lifestyle and budget is just as important as finding the right products for your skin.
While most people know that their skin needs to be cleansed and moisturized, many aren’t as familiar with the in-between skin care steps that can make a world of difference to their complexion. In addition, your skin requires a slightly different routine at night than during the day. In order to help you navigate the seeming complexities of skin care, we’ve put together this short, helpful guide!
Step 1 (AM/PM): Cleanse
As a general rule, you should wash your face twice a day: Once in the morning and once at night. However, if your skin is dry or extremely oily, you may want to skip the morning cleanse in order to avoid an overproduction of sebum. Try using just water in the mornings for a week and see how your skin reacts!
Tip: If you wear foundation during the day, use a gentle cleanser to dissolve your makeup before washing.
Step 2 (PM only): Exfoliate
Everyone needs to exfoliate their skin…it’s just a question of how frequently. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to stick to one or two times a week. If you live in an area with hard water, however, you may need to exfoliate daily to avoid the buildup of mineral deposits that can clog your pores.
Tip: This is the time to use wash-off masks – after exfoliating but before toning.
Step 3 (AM/PM): Tone
Many people skip this step because they believe a toner is only for removing the last traces of makeup and dirt. But a good toner can help clarify, balance, and refine your pores, preparing your skin for the next step.
Step 4 (AM/PM): Hydrate / Correct
After cleansing and toning, your skin is ready for a serum. Think of a serum as a supplement boost for your skin. They’re usually very lightweight with a high concentration of active ingredients that address any skin issues. If your concern is hydration, you can opt for a serum with hyaluronic acid. While if you’re looking for a more even skin tone, you might try one with vitamin C to brighten your complexion.
Tip: To boost your skin’s hydration, try using a sheet mask after applying your serums.
Tip: If you use an eye cream, determine when to apply it based on how heavy the product is. If it’s heavier than your moisturizer, put it on first. If it’s lighter, apply afterward.
Step 5 (AM version) Moisturize and Protect:
Use a moisturizer with sunscreen! This is non negotiable. Sunscreen protects you from UV rays that can cause both short-term and long-term damage to your skin.
Step 5 (PM version) Renew:
The nighttime is the right time to use heavy duty products, as it gives your skin enough time to soak up all the benefits of a plant-based face oil. We suggest warming three to four drops of oil between your hands, then gently pressing it into your skin to avoid unnecessary rubbing.
